XVI-XVIII Centuries
The antique fund of the University of Valencia has similar
characteristes to the rest of the Spanish historical Universities,
since the constitution of their collections has followed
a common trajectory, with the difference that in Valencia,
the fund coming from the expelled jesuits passed on to the
Archbishop’s palace.
The collection is of an encyclopedical characteristic,
greater weight mainly of the humanistic subjects, which
shows the diversity of its sources and the different likings
and professions of its many donors.
The library counts with several books which are most valuable
due to their rarity or cultural interest, as the lifes of
Saint Onofre and Saint Vicente Ferrer printed, respectively,
by Juan Joffré in 1502 and by Jorge Costilla in 1510,
and with a large representation of juridical, historical
and literary works of local nature: different editions of
the “Furs”, histories of the kingdom of Valencia
(Beuter, Escolano, Viciana, ...), works written by distinguished
valencians as Luis Vives, Palmireno, Juan de Celaya -from
XVI century-, Hipólito de Samper, Juan Bautista de
Valda, Tomás Vicente Tosca, Juan Bautista Trobat
-from XVII century-, Gregorio Mayans, Jorge Juan, Antonio
José Cavanilles, Juan Sala, Juan Bautista Muñoz
-from XVIII century-, etc.
The valencian printing press is largely represented: works
of the XVI century by Cristòfor Cofman, Juan Joffré,
Juan de Mey, Pedro Huete, etc.; those of XVII century by
Pedro Patricio and Felipe Mey, Jaume de Bordazar, Claudio
Macé, etc.; of XVIII century, by José Esteban
Dolz, José y Tomás de Orga, Salvador Faulí
and the magnificent editions from Benito Monfort, etc.
There is a manual card index specific for every century;
XVI century counts also with a printed catalog, and the
XVII can be consulted in a data bases. Also, a great part
of the centuries XVI and XVII funds are introduced in the
Collective
Catalog of the Valencian Bibliographic Patrimony and
in the Collective
Catalog of the Spaniser Bibliographic Patrimony.
At present, these funds are also being introduced in our
computerezed catalog "Trobes"
and its digitization is being carried out as well.
